1. Setting up an electricity connection and connecting an offtake point

The distribution system operator will set up an electricity connection as far as to the boundaries of the property or to the electricity meter, at the costs of the person for whom it is set up. The costs for setting up an electricity connection are included in the connection fee. Setting up a connection from the electricity meter to the property is the responsibility of consumers at their own cost.

To set up an electricity connection or an offtake point connection successfully, the right to the property in question or right to use the property is essential.

  • If you own or are building a property which is not yet connected to the distribution system, but it is located in an area with an system that is already built, you simply need to follow the steps for setting up a new connection listed below.
  • If you just want to notify a change of the electricity consumer at an existing connected offtake point (such as upon the purchase or lease of property), you need to contact your electricity supplier. Your supplier will arrange the consumer change for you in cooperation with the original consumer.
  • If you plan to equip a residential object with more energy-intensive equipment or the current main circuit breaker value (the maximum reserved capacity), the number of electricity meter phases (1 phase/3 phases), electricity meter tariffs (1-tariff measuring/2-tariff measuring), etc. are not sufficient, it is necessary to follow the steps for changing a connection.

To set up a connection for a new offtake point, the following series of steps must be followed:

The procedure for connecting a new offtake point may vary depending on the distribution system operator (only in Slovak):

File an application for connection

An application for connection of an offtake point to the distribution system may be filed:

  • online;
  • by post;
  • by email;
  • via the relevant electricity supplier.

Attach the required attachment to the application

If you are planning to build a new house, attach the required site plan to the application, which should include:

  • the identification of the building location;
  • the land plot number with street names; in the case of several land plot numbers and separate pieces of land, list all of them.

The distribution system operator then will send you a draft connection agreement for an applicant’s electricity offtake point to the distribution system within 30 days from submission of the application.

Deliver the signed agreement

Deliver the signed connection agreement to the distribution system operator. The agreement may be delivered by email or post.

The connection agreement includes information on technical conditions (e.g. the need to install a metering switchboard) that become binding for both the applicant and the distribution system operator once the draft agreement is signed and delivered.

Pay the connection fee

Pay the connection fee within the set deadline. If you fail to pay the connection fee within the set deadline, the draft agreement expires, and you will have to submit a new application for connection.

Prepare the offtake point

Within the set deadline, prepare the offtake point and provide the distribution system operator with the documents listed in the technical conditions for setting up a connection (TPP).

The distribution system operator checks compliance with the technical conditions for setting up a connection, prepares the offtake point on the side of the distribution system operator within the deadline set in the Connection Agreement and then sends the applicant a notification of compliance with the TPP.

Select a supplier and conclude an agreement on the supply and distribution of electricity

The last step is entering into an agreement on the supply and distribution of electricity with the selected supplier.

The list of electricity suppliers is published on the website of the Regulatory Office for Network Industries (only in Slovak).

The distribution network operator then installs an electricity meter at the offtake point within 5 days of receiving the request for installation of an electricity meter.

The selected electricity supplier asks the distribution system operator to install an electricity meter.

Pay the connection fee by:

  • a bank deposit or bank transfer to the relevant account; or
  • a money order attached to the connection agreement.

The draft agreement expires and the applicant is be obliged to submit a new application for connection if a signed agreement has not been delivered to the distribution system operator within the set deadline or if the TPP have not been fulfilled within the set deadline.

2. Contact details of distribution system operators

If you have any questions, contact the relevant regional distribution system operator. Applicants may contact the operator, where appropriate, on the customer helpline, online chat or email. In the case of a breakdown, the breakdown helpline is available 24/7.
