1. What documents are required?

If you are a Union citizen, you will need:

If you are not a Union citizen, but you are a family member of a Union citizen, you will need:

  • An application for a residence card;
  • a valid identity card or travel document;
  • proof that you have a certified relationship with a Union citizen;
  • a registration document of the Union citizen you are accompanying;
  • an evidence of accommodation.

2. Where and how to apply for a residence card?

An application for registration shall be submitted to the relevant local Foreign Police Department of the Police Force. Contacts can be found directly on the website of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic. Your personal presence is required for registration at the Foreign Police Department of the Police Force. The booking system allows you to register the application and make an appointment with the Foreign Police Department. The booking form is available on the website of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic.

3. When is it required to apply for a residence card?

The application for registration shall be submitted within 30 days from the expiry of 3 months from the date of entry into the territory of the Slovak Republic. A Union citizen is not obliged to apply for a residence card. If you apply for a residence card, it will be issued to you within 30 days from submitting the application. You can pick up the card in person at the Foreign Police Department of the Police Force or you can have it sent by post to the provided delivery address.

4. What are the fees for issuing a residence card?

You shall pay the fee in the form of a EUR 4.50 stamp; in the case of an expedited issue of the card (within 48 hours), the fee is EUR 24.50 and the fee for the card delivery to the provided delivery address is EUR 3.

5. What sanctions are applicable for non-compliance with obligations?

As a Union citizen you commit an offence if:

  • You fail to register the beginning of your stay within 10 working days from entry into the territory of the Slovak Republic.
  • You fail to register at a Foreign Police Department of the Police Force within 30 days from the expiry of a 3-month period from the date of your entry into the territory of the Slovak Republic.
Note: 
A Union citizen is not obliged to apply for a residence card. However, if you do apply for the card, you shall be obliged to protect it against loss, theft, damage or misappropriation. You shall also be obliged to report its loss, theft, or damage to a police department within 10 days from the date you found out about it. You face a fine of up to EUR 300 for the offences stipulated above.
