Employment

Employee remuneration is governed by provisions of the Labour Code in connection with the Act on the minimum wage.

1. Remuneration

Employee remuneration is governed by provisions of the Labour Code in connection with the Act on the minimum wage.

Employers are obliged to agree upon wage conditions with employees by means of employment contracts or collective agreements. As part of the wage conditions, in particular, the forms of remuneration for employees, the basic wage component and other components of remuneration for work and the conditions for providing them must be agreed upon.

The Labour Code provides the employee with a legal entitlement to the following:

  • wage surcharge for overtime work;
  • wage surcharge for work on a public/state holiday;
  • wage surcharge for work on Saturday;
  • wage surcharge for work on Sunday;
  • wage surcharge for night work;
  • wage compensation for difficult working conditions;
  • wage compensation for the inactive part of standby duty outside the workplace;
  • wage for the inactive part of standby duty at the workplace.

2. Wage for overtime work

An employee is entitled to wages earned and a wage surcharge equal to at least:

  • 25 % of the employee’s average earnings;
  • 35 % the employee’s average earnings to do hazardous work.

3. Wage for work on a public/state holiday

For work on a state/public holiday, an employee is entitled to a wage surcharge of at least 100 % of the employee's average earnings, in addition to the wage earned.

4. Wage for work on Saturday

For work on Saturday, an employee is entitled to a wage surcharge of at leastEUR 1,79 per hour for work on Saturday. .

5. Wage for work on Sunday

For work on Sunday, an employee is entitled to a wage surcharge of at least EUR 3,58 per hour for work on Sunday.

6. Wage for night work

For night work, an employee is entitled to a wage surcharge of at least EUR 1,43 per hour for night work, and in the case of hazardous work, an employee is entitled to a wage surcharge of at least EUR 1,79 per hour for night work.

7. Wage compensation for difficult working conditions

For difficult working conditions in hazardous work, an employee is entitled to a wage compensation of at leastEUR 0,72 per hour. .

8. Wage compensation for the inactive part of standby duty outside the workplace

If an employee remains at an agreed place for a certain period of time outside the working hours and is ready to work under the employment contract, it is considered a standby duty. The every hourwhen an employee is ready to work but does not actually work is considered the inactive part of the standby duty. An employee is entitled to a wage compensation of at least 0,72 EUR.

9. Wage for the inactive part of standby duty at the workplace

For the duration of the inactive part of standby duty in the workplace, employees are entitled to a wage representing the proportionate part of their basic wage. Where the agreed amount of the basic wage is lower than the minimum wage, an employee is entitled to a wage representing the minimum wage for the inactive part of the standby duty.

10. 13th and 14th salary

As of 1 May 2018, an employer may pay employees the thirteenth salary during the summer holidays and the fourteenth salary during the Christmas holidays. Employers has the option, not the obligation, to pay out a bonus to employees in June and December in the form of this monetary benefit.

11. Minimum wage

Every employee is legally entitled to a wage at least in the amount of the minimum wage. As of 1 January 2021, the amounts of minimum wage are as follows:

  • EUR 623 per month for an employee receiving a monthly salary,
  • EUR 3,580 per hour worked by the employee.
